This music video is of Jimmy Eat World and their song The Middle which they released in 2001. It is part of the indie rock genre and i have analysed the main conventions they have conveyed throughout as a part of research that i need for my own production in indie rock. In order to create a music video for the genre of music i need to understand what needs to be included and used within the video to get across that this is indie rock because each genre of music has different expectations in their videos of hat their target audience want to see.
One of the main conventions the used was to include a band instrumental performance throughout and this is what is expected of any rock genre and this is so you cam see that the music itself makes sense because the instruments that are being played in the piece of music need to sync up with something in the music video and the best way to do that is to make sure there are musicians from the bands that are performing their role in order to bring this music to their audience. It is also what the target audience want to see so in order to make the video they need to appeal to their audience very importantly otherwise there is no point of the music video being created if it isn't promoting what the artist have made to their fans who demand this from them.
Another convention that i see this music video has used is the way the artists are represented and this is by the use of their scruffy clothing and they all in a way have their own style because they are all very similar but also have their own features because fans are always favouring specific band members and in order to meet what they want whether it what they wear or even how they do their hair.
The scene for this music video is a big house full of young people in their underwear who are drinking, getting very stupidly drunk and destroying the place doing whatever they wis to do. This is conventional because they are showing as part of the rock culture, people drink and do drugs and then act in a manner where they don't consider nobody but themselves as they do whatever they want in their drunk state and don't take authority to thought at all. This is good because i want to combine drunk and emotion together to show that it can be used to cover how people feel and do what they want with alcohol.
One last thing I noticed was the use of Sexual feelings and how love was shown and i think this is also very conventional as rock genre is on where its main purpose is to portray emotion in ways it needs to as band members are always writing songs from life events that have left them in a state where music releases their emotion so i think convention wise, love is something to hit on because it is a strong emotion and it would be good to show.
Micro elements i picked up on were such like close ups of the main band singer. They will always be the most famous of the band and the main icon and people will show more interest in them so i think it is important to use this sort of cinematography of having the singer up close to the camera singing. Long shots of the band are conventional because the audience actually want to see the band playing together because it makes more sense having some long shots then having all the performance cut up into many mid shots.
They have used fast paced editing to increase the pace of the song because it isn't on with a slow drum line. The drums are fast and so are the band following so i think it is good that it is showing the tempo of the song with its use of editing. Also there is a lot of low key lighting because i don't think it being bright and vibrant would be conventional to the genre, so the dimmed green and orange lighting placed around the scene shows everyone is just chilled and enjoying their time at this party.
This genre of music can be aimed at many people because there isn't usually a limit on who can listen to what music. but with indie it can be young people from maybe looking at 16-21 and i think this target audience is the type of people who drink a lot, act rebellious and are sexually active. So how this genre applies to this audience i can see. This target audience is important as i am aiming my product to people of this age group so this research will apply as i will aim to follow conventions using what i have analysed from this music video and the way it represents certain things.
It is important that i researched what this music genre hold within its conventions because before i wouldn't have know much about what to include but now i have analysed Jimmy Eat Worlds music video i know pretty much what is included in this genre so i can use this research and put it forward into planning the production of my music video because as i am planning i can say here this needs to go and there we need to produce this so we can overall produce a music video that appeals to our audience of the indie rock genre and in this way i will make sure my production for this music video is conventional to its genre.
